Toyota 4Runner vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee Comparison Near Tifton, GA

Compare the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Toyota 4Runner near Tifton GA.

When it comes to mid-size SUVs that are both family friendly and adventurous, the two most capable models are the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Toyota 4Runner. Both vehicles offer spacious seating accommodations, lots of cargo room, and off-road capability not typically found in the segment. At first glance, both models seem like great choices. However, closer inspection reveals the 4Runner's many shortcomings.

Grand Cherokee offers several potent engine options, advanced tech and safety features, and a a modern upscale driving experience that can be equipped to rival popular luxury models. The 4Runner, however, is struggling to keep pace with the times, and it shows in its ascetic feature set and austere cabin.

Jeep Grand Cherokee vs. Toyota 4Runner: Power and Ability

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is powered by a standard 3.6-liter V-6 engine that makes 295 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Four other engines are also available:

  • 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6: 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque (optional on Limited and above)
  • 5.7-liter V-8: 360 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque (optional on Limited and above)
  • 6.4-liter V-8: 475 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque (SRT)
  • 6.2-liter supercharged V-8: 707 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque (Trackhawk)

That's right…a Grand Cherokee with more than 700 horsepower! Conversely, the 4Runner offers only one engine: a 4.0-liter V-6 (270 horsepower, 278 pound-feet of torque) paired with a five-speed automatic transmission.

Both the Grand Cherokee and 4Runner offer a few highly capable off-road variants that are well-equipped for adventures away from the curbed confines of the asphalt. Therefore, the capability wild card is towing. A properly equipped Grand Cherokee can tow up to 6,200 pounds, and up to 7,400 with the optional V-8 power plant. The 4Runner offers a max towing capacity of just 5,000 pounds and offers no factory trailer controls.

Jeep Grand Cherokee vs. Toyota 4Runner: Features

When comparing standard and available features, the well equipped Grand Cherokee makes the Toyota 4Runner look quite spartan by comparison. While 4Runner shows its age, the Grand Cherokee continues to evolve. Not only does it offer technology that is better and newer, it offers several critical safety features that are absent on all trim levels of the Toyota 4 Runner.

  • Standard Features: At the base level, the Grand Cherokee offers rear parking sensors, keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration.
  • Conversely, the 4Runner offers a 6.1-inch touchscreen, but no Apple or Android smartphone integration. Climate control, keyless entry and ignition, and parking sensors are all available on the 4Runner, but only at the highest "Limited" trim.

  • Available features:: The Grand Cherokee can be equipped with features like active noise canceling technology, noise-reducing window glass, a self-parking system and a premium 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

These features are nowhere to be found on any available 4Runner models, though 4Runner TRD Pro models do get a JBL 15-speaker audio system.

Jeep Grand Cherokee vs. Toyota 4Runner: Safety and Driver Assistance Technology

The Jeep Grand Cherokee can be equipped with several modern safety technologies and driver aids for added security on Cordele and Ocilla roads. These include:

  • Standard Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path Detection
  • Standard ParkSense® Rear Park Assist System
  • Standard ParkView® Rear Back Up Camera
  • Available Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop
  • Available Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking
  • Available LaneSense® Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist
  • Available Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist system

On the other hand, the Toyota 4Runner only offers a standard backup camera, and available parking sensors. No other systems can be found on the 2019 4Runner.
